An affordable reader for the visually impaired
Collaborating with a group of medical students, we developed an affordable reader for the visually impaired.
The current solutions on the market are expensive and thus not affordable for the visually impaired. The main reason for these prices is the technology used in the solutions, as they're based on powerful cameras and complex optical systems. Our prototype relied heavily on advanced image processing algorithms, to improve the image quality produced by affordable optical components. This way, the quality of the physical equipment (and thus the overall price of the system) could be lowered, without the loss of quality of the produced images.
The prototype was built with Raspberry Pi, using a navigation system, LED lighting, and an affordable camera. The navigation system allowed users to navigate through the text, zoom in and out, and change the color and the contrast of the text.
